About Whatcom County
Whatcom County is 2,500 square miles between the Salish Sea and the Cascade crest, with about 230,000 people — 95,000 of them in Bellingham and the rest spread across a dozen towns, farm valleys, and the Mt. Baker Highway. Four things drive it: Western Washington University and PeaceHealth in the city, the Cherry Point refineries on the coast, dairy and berry agriculture in the north county, and the Canadian border, which shapes commuting, shopping, and who buys homes in Blaine and Lynden.
Housing follows geography. Bellingham and its neighborhoods carry the premium; Ferndale and Lynden offer newer stock ten to twenty-five minutes out; Blaine and Birch Bay put waterfront within reach; and the Nooksack Valley towns — Everson, Nooksack, Sumas — plus the foothills offer the county's entry prices and acreage. The 2021 Nooksack flood still shapes buying in the valley.
