About Mt. Baker Foothills
The Mt. Baker Highway climbs 60 miles from Bellingham to Artist Point, and the communities along it — Deming at the river forks, Kendall and Maple Falls with their lakes and stores, Glacier at the ski-area gate — make up the foothills. Logging built them; skiing, river recreation, and short-term rentals sustain them, along with a growing number of full-time residents who want the mountain out the window.
Housing is cabins and A-frames from the 1970s, two large HOA communities (Peaceful Valley and Paradise Lakes) with lots and homes across a wide price range, riverfront parcels along the Nooksack, and new custom homes. It's the county's most affordable recreation property and its most STR-friendly.
