About Mount Vernon
Mount Vernon is the Skagit County seat and the valley's commercial center — famous for April's tulip fields, a revived downtown along the Skagit River, and the hospital and college that employ much of the town. About 36,000 people live in a city that stretches from the flat valley floor to the wooded east hills.
Housing follows the topography: historic homes and floodplain neighborhoods near downtown and west of I-5; 1970s–90s ranchers on the near-east side; and Skagit Highlands, Eaglemont, and Little Mountain plats on the hill, where most new construction and appreciation live. Big Lake, ten minutes east, adds lakefront.
